The erstwhile Vice President Alhadji Sam-Sumana has reportedly replaced his lawyer Jenkins Johnston with the opposition`s PMDC leader, Charles Francis Margai. With such a dramatic decision, analysts say it’s obvious Sam Sumana is digging for an all out battle. The choice of Charles Margai, widely regarded as tempestous and bearing a deep seated malice against the APC and its leader has been described as an emotional outburst without the benefit of reasoning. ”He has only further alienated himself from his former party”, one observer pointed out. Whatever benefits he hopes to achieve by this decision may remain a fleeting illusion and an obvious mark of desperation in an otherwise very awkward predicament.
Sam Sumana was recently expelled from the All Peoples Congress on grounds of his anti-party activities, violence, academic and religiuos dishonesty. Consequent upon his losing his political party membership considered as a continuous requirement among others for holding the office of the Vice Presidenct, President Koroma, by virtue of the ”Supreme Executive Powers conferred on him by the Constitution, announced the removal of Sam-Sumana from office. Sam Sumana has been challenging this decision in the country’ Supreme Court. He wants the court to interprete the law on the conditions for the removal of a vice president and whether the President’s Supreme Authority gave him power to take such a decision. His hope is that the decision may be reversed but many observers who have been following Sierra Leone’s constitutional and political developments appear to hold the view that this is quite a tough one. The matter is currently in process.
